Members of the Elk Valley business community converged on Elkford on Wednesday October 15th to attend a Broadband Forum organized by the Elk Valley Economic Initiative in association with the Province of BC and Invest Kootenay.
Held at the Elkford Community Conference Centre, the forum was an interactive session with presentations from the municipalities of Elkford, Sparwood and Fernie along with Rob Gay, Chair of the Kootenay Regional Broadband Initiative and Aimee Ambrosone, COO of the Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation.
Attendees were able to voice their views and concerns over access to broadband in the region and understand what the specific plans and timeframes are for roll out within the Basin.
From a business perspective, it was encouraging to hear of the ambitious plans for connecting communities to a robust and high speed infrastructure which will help to attract businesses to the region.

Financial Bootcamp in Elkford – October 7th, 2014
The Elk Valley Economic Initiative has successfully delivered two workshops in the communities of Elkford and Fernie through a partnership with Kootenay Rockies Innovation Council.
A ‘Financial Bootcamp’ held in Elkford on October 7th, 2014 helped business owners understand basic financial principles that must be applied to business decision-making on a daily basis. Workshop material covered the functions of, and how to interpret cash flow management, credit and collections, the cost/profit/volume relationship and key business ratios.
Fernie hosted a ‘Mentor Panel’ on December 11th, 2014 with five expert business people who conducted face to face interviews with local entrepreneurs with the goal of gearing feedback specifically to challenges or opportunities that they were facing.
The Elk Valley Economic Initiative is motivated to work alongside partners to deliver events that inform and educate businesses within the region and offer support to help build and diversify the economy.]]>
